WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA?

WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA?

Last updated on 22 August 2019, Thursday by Dr.Etöz Editorial Staff

Gynecomastia is a condition in which the male breast is larger than normal rates. This problem, which creates negativity in terms of aesthetics, causes low self-confidence in men. Gynecomastia occurs as a side effect of some drugs or due to hormonal disorders. The only treatment of gynecomastia is surgery.

Gynecomastia, which can also be observed in infancy and old age, occurs most frequently in adolescence. Although gynecomastia is not harmful to health, it causes distress and embarrassment. Long-standing gynecomastia does not regress spontaneously.

What causes gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is caused by irregularity or instability of estrogen and testosterone hormones. In other words, if the amount of testosterone in the body decreases or the amount of estrogen increases, gynecomastia may occur. This hormonal change can have many causes. Some of these changes are natural and there is no underlying medical condition.

Hormone changes

Many health problems can disrupt the normal balance of hormones and cause gynecomastia such as:

  • Hypogonadism: Gynecomastia may be observed in health problems that cause deterioration in testosterone production such as pituitary gland insufficiency.
  • Tumors: Tumors found in organs such as testis, adrenal, the pituitary gland may disrupt the balance of sex-determining hormones.
  • Hyperthyroidism: Overexpression of thyroid hormone may cause gynecomastia.
  • Kidney failure: Gynecomastia is a problem encountered in hemodialysis patients.
  • Liver failure and cirrhosis: Gynecomastia can be observed in liver problems due to irregularities in hormones.
